Purchase Intent Intelligence
Interpreted the underlying objective represented inside each search and advertising context.
Large retailer / Paid search intelligence
During the most competitive retail period of the year, a leading omnichannel retailer improved paid-search response by communicating greater relevance, not by sacrificing margin.
01 / Business context
The company was a leading integrated retailer connecting digital and physical shopping experiences. Google Ads was its largest paid advertising channel, with tens of millions of dollars in spending distributed across fifteen accounts.
Ahead of the year-end holiday season, the retailer wanted to improve ad-copy performance across this large portfolio. The commercial stakes were immediate: holiday competition intensifies, customer attention becomes more expensive, and discounting is often used to manufacture response.
02 / The acquisition problem
Producing more ad copy was not the real problem. The retailer needed to determine which language would align with shopper intent, improve relevance, and give Google stronger creative signals across a complex account estate.
The work also needed to move quickly. The deployment and observed results occurred within thirty days, leaving little room for a long sequence of disconnected manual tests.
03 / The intelligence questions
What were holiday shoppers trying to accomplish in each acquisition context?
Which language would better connect product relevance to that intent?
Could stronger messaging outperform previous promotional advertising without using a discount?
How would Google respond when the relationship among intent, ad content, and engagement became clearer?
04 / The intelligence applied
The work predates today’s MotiveMap architecture. Viewed through the current model, the outcome came from connecting these forms of intelligence, not applying an isolated optimization.
Interpreted the underlying objective represented inside each search and advertising context.
Considered what holiday shoppers needed to see, believe, or value before acting.
Translated that understanding into more relevant ad language across the portfolio.
Recognized that ad relevance and customer response also act as signals to Google’s delivery system.
Kept the work within the retailer’s offer and messaging constraints, including the decision not to depend on discount language.
Measured response, conversion efficiency, Quality Score, and net revenue after deployment.
05 / What changed
Understanding alone does not change performance. MotiveMetrics translated it into a more coherent acquisition environment, giving people greater control and publisher AI better inputs.
Connected shopper intent more directly to the language used in paid-search ads.
Created and deployed new content across fifteen accounts within thirty days.
Improved message relevance without using discount language in the ads.
Compared the new content with prior promotional advertising.
Measured both platform response and net-revenue impact.
06 / The outcome
Within thirty days, the retailer improved net revenue across the optimizations, increased conversions per impression by as much as 176%, increased click-through rate 70%, and improved Quality Score across all optimizations.
The new ads also outperformed previous promotional ads without offering a discount in the ad copy. That made the result economically more meaningful than response purchased through a lower price alone.
07 / Why it worked
The documented result shows that the retailer improved both customer response and publisher-facing relevance. Our current interpretation is that better alignment among shopper intent, message, and acquisition context created a stronger signal than generic promotional language.
Customers encountered advertising that was more relevant to what they were trying to accomplish. Their response supplied positive behavioral evidence. Google’s Quality Score improved, and the resulting acquisition activity produced substantially more net revenue.
Content is not decoration added after targeting. It is part of the signal system that influences people, publisher AI, and business outcomes.
The larger story
MotiveMap connects people, market, acquisition, publisher, and governance intelligence to identify opportunity, improve signals, and guide governed action.
